Shannon Moyneur Leads with Double-Digit Blocks
Shannon Moyneur’s (Valley Center, CA) 12 total blocks propelled the UC Riverside volleyball team to a 3-1 win at Cal State Northridge in Big West Conference action on Halloween night. The Highlanders (8-16, 3-6) battled to four sets with the Matadors (6-18, 1-10) before clinching the match with a 30-28 fourth set score, beating CSUN for the second time this season.
After tying the first set at one apiece UCR went on to build a 10-5 lead off a Kelly Fink (San Dimas, CA) kill. Northridge got within one, 20-19, before the Highlanders outscored the Matadors five to one to close out the match 25-20 off Dominique Cowling’s (Benicia, CA) kill.
In the second, UCR and CSUN battled back and forth as each of the first ten points saw a tie score. The Highlanders then took a 15-11 lead before the Matadors came back and tied it at 17 apiece and eventually went on to take the set 25-23. The tables turned in favor of the Highlanders in the third as they trailed 19-17 before coming from behind to win it 25-22, accentuated by five kills in the last eight points.
After a mini-marathon fourth set that featured multiple lead changes, UCR was able to close out the match by taking advantage of two straight attack errors by the Matadors, including the 12th block of the night for Moyneur at match point.
This is the second time this season that Moyneur recorded three block solos en route to double-digit total blocks. In fact, Moyneur’s 12 blocks were one shy of CSUN’s total blocks as UCR out-blocked the Matadors 35 to 13. Raquel Salinas (San Leandro, CA) recorded a game-high .550 attack percentage with a season-high 11 kills and no errors on 20 attempts for the Highlanders.
UCR is back in action tomorrow evening as they take on Cal State Fullerton at 7:00 pm in Fullerton.
