Two-time AVCA All-American, four-time All-MPSF honoree, and Riverside native Maurice Torres joined the UC Riverside Women’s Volleyball coaching staff in August of 2025.
Torres comes to UCR from Division II West Regional power Cal State Los Angeles, where he led the Golden Eagles to a second-place finish at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament and a spot in the NCAA Tournament Regional Quarterfinals.
Torres also managed the girls' volleyball program at La Salle College Prep from the ground up in 2023 and 2024. Torres engineered an astonishing single-season turnaround at La Salle, taking a 3-23 squad to the CIF Quarterfinals the following year for the school’s first postseason appearance in two years.
He also coached at OC Riptides and Spectrum Volleyball Club while playing for the legendary Marv Dunphy at Pepperdine from 2009 to 2013.
Torres enjoyed a highly successful decade of professional volleyball in Europe and Asia from 2013 to 2022, additionally captaining the Puerto Rican National Team from 2018 to 2020. He led Puerto Rico to two World Championship appearances, two Olympic Qualifiers, and multiple North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) tournaments.
At the club level, Torres was most recently a silver medalist at the Turkish Cup and a two-time bronze medalist in the Turkish Superleague with Galatasaray. Torres also played in Japan, France, Italy, and Poland, where he led Zaka KEDZIERZYN-KOZLE to a fourth-place Champions League finish.
Torres’ name is all over the Pepperdine record book. He currently ranks in the top 10 in career kills, aces, points, and sets played. He led the Waves in kills all four years, aces three times, and digs twice. He received All-American status from the AVCA and Volleyball America, also immediately putting his stamp on the legendary program with an MPSF All-Freshman honor.
Torres earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Pepperdine in 2013.
