Highlanders drop first match of Halloween weekend
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside (4-18, 0-11 Big West) dropped a 3-0 match (20-25, 17-25, 14-25) to Sacramento State (11-11, 6-5 Big West) on Friday night at the SRC Arena.
McKenna Giles recorded a career-high 16 digs in the defeat while Elena Kasavica tied her season high for assists (22) in a three-set match.
UCR tied set one at eight on a Hornet attack error, then at 11 on Andrea Brewer's first of two aces. She and Sariah Johnson paced the hosts with three kills apiece in set one.
Another Brewer ace gave the Highlanders a 3-1 jumpstart in set two. Sacramento State closed in at 3-2 on a Johnson hitting error, but the Houston native redeemed herself with a kill to reclaim a two-point advantage. UC Riverside strung together mini runs to keep things close in set two and out-dug the Hornets in the frame, 9-7.
Brewer and Madison Pulsipher combined for eight of UCR's 10 kills in set three while the Highlanders matched Sac State on digs at 13 apiece. Pulsipher was UC Riverside's sparkplug in set three and put the hosts within striking distance at 10-13, but UC Riverside couldn't recover.
UCR closes the weekend on Saturday, October 31, with a 1:00 pm first serve against Utah Valley on ESPN+. Tickets are available now at GoHighlanders.com/tickets.
