Multiple Highlanders record career highs
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside (4-17, 0-10 Big West) dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 (18-25, 16-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-17) Crosstown Showdown on Saturday night at Van Dyne Gym on the campus of California Baptist (5-16, 2-8 Big West).
Multiple Highlanders recorded career highs in the marathon match while UCR racked up a season-high 59 kills.
Neither side took hold of the match early with a competitive opening set, but Casi Doll, who recorded career highs of 15 kills and nine digs, picked up where she left off on Friday with two early kills on two swings. UCR trailed 15-10 at the first break while hitting .300.
Set one later picked up its energy on both sides of the net as Andrea Brewer came up with the kill and block on consecutive points to keep the Highlanders hanging around.
Doll went over the block in set two to cement UCR's longest run of the match, three consecutive points, at 6-7. Doll and Brewer carried the majority of the Highlander offense, but it was Zeynep Belgutay stopping the Lancer run with an easy kill from the middle.
Despite the occasional CBU point, UC Riverside picked up its feet late in set two. Consecutive kills from Sariah Johnson forced the Lancers to call time with UCR attempting to tackle a 19-15 deficit, but CBU finished off set two.
Johnson also enjoyed a career night with 13 kills, seven digs, an assist, and three blocks.
A delayed pickup in offense made for a competitive start to set three, and four straight Lancer errors gave UCR an 11-10 lead. UCR took the lead back at 15-14 with Misu Nguyen serving up a pair of aces.
Nguyen was behind the service line for an 8-0 run that took UCR to the 20-point plateau. A 4-0 run fueled by Lancer errors ended with a 25-18 set victory.
More errors on CBU's side opened a 4-1 lead early in set four, and Brewer made it 5-1 with her ninth kill. Elena Kasavica picked up a rare kill and Sariah Johnson put up a solo block and UCR's eighth. Belgutay continued the run with a kill, and a Lancer error made it 4-0 and 12-8 on the board.
Kasavica delivered her second ace to go up 23-19 before CBU called time and UCR forced set five.
The Highlanders hit .244 in set four.
Set five started just as competitively, with a 5-5 tie with the previous eight points going back and forth. Andrea Brewer ended a defensive rally with a critical point, but a back-and-forth fifth set featured 14 ties before CBU closed things out.
UCR returns to the court on Friday, October 30, with a 6:00 pm first serve against Sacramento State at the SRC Arena on ESPN+. Tickets are available now at GoHighlanders.com/tickets.
