Hendrix records career day against Roadrunners
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside (4-13, 0-6 Big West) capped off its second home Big West weekend on Saturday evening at the SRC Arena with a 3-2 defeat (16-25, 27-29, 25-18, 27-25, 4-15) to Cal State Bakersfield (8-10, 3-3 Big West).
Evelyn Hendrix recorded a career-high eight kills in the outing.
Bakersfield service errors kept UCR close in set one while both sides registered two aces apiece in the early going. Back-to-back miscues from the Roadrunners, one from the service line and one at the net, put UC Riverside over the 10-point mark in set one.
The Highlanders avenged their first-set performance early in set two, epitomized by Hendrix putting away free ball down for an easy kill and a 4-2 lead. Casi Doll stuffed CSUB at the antenna and capped a 4-0 run to make it 5-2.
Elena Kasavica's second ace of the match later on kept the home side a nose in front while UCR continued strong-arming a struggling Bakersfield attack. UC Riverside led 15-12 at the set two media timeout while holding CSUB's hitting in the negative.
Cal State Bakersfield caught a bit of fire with a 5-0 run and overtook the Highlanders with a 17-16 advantage before points began exchanging sides. UCR leveled things at 17 with a Hendrix kill, then flipped the script for an 18-17 lead before Bakersfield turned the score back on its head.
UCR fought off two set points and forced extra play before dropping a second set that featured nine ties and seven lead changes. Andrea Brewer, who recorded 10+ kills for the second time in Big West play, led the Highlanders in set two with nine kills after logging zero in set one.
The hosts turned a 4-1 deficit in set three into a 5-5 tie with Sariah Johnson's fourth kill, and eventually churned out a 7-1 run after another Hendrix kill. UCR stayed a hair ahead of CSUB, and after Bakersfield trimmed the deficit to one, Hendrix and Malia Tanksley rose up for the block and the 15-13 lead.
Continued success at the net and behind the service line pushed UCR to the 20-point plateau first. Two attack errors put set point in the Highlanders' court, and a third attempt to avoid the sweep proved successful after another blunder from the visitors.
UC Riverside dominated their counterparts in hitting in set four, .269 to .043.
Neither side's lead grew larger than two to start set four, but UCR tied the frame at nine with a block from Johnson and Izzy Jeffery. The Highlanders took their first lead at 11-10 on Tanksley's fifth kill. Tanksley stuffed a Bakersfield attack later to knot things up at 12 until the Roadrunners went into a media timeout with a 15-12 lead.
Hendrix snapped a 7-0 Bakersfield run with an easy kill from the middle that set a new career high, and Brewer's 16th kill trimmed the deficit back to four at 21-17. UC Riverside had soon rattled off seven points of its own in a 7-1 run to make it 21-20 and force Bakersfield into a timeout. The Highlanders fought off two set points before forcing set five.
UCR fell behind early in set five and continued struggling out of a timeout before dropping the set and match.
UC Riverside returns to action on Friday, October 16, for a 7:00 pm tilt at UC Santa Barbara as the Highlanders hit the road for the third time in conference play.
