Pulsipher leads the way with nine kills
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside (4-19, 0-12 Big West) ended Halloween weekend on Saturday afternoon at the SRC Arena with a 3-0 defeat (27-29, 22-25, 18-25) to Utah Valley (8-16, 6-6 Big West).
Malia Tanksley picked up two of UCR's first four kills in set one. The Highlanders kept it close at the media break trailing 15-10 with an 8-7 advantage in digs.
UC Riverside stayed a nose behind Utah Valley throughout set one, but a late surge made things interesting as back-to-back fortunate touches brought the Highlanders to within 22-21. UCR tied set one at 22 on an attack error, and Andrea Brewer gave the hosts their first lead at 23-22.
Both sides traded extra points until Utah Valley won the set, 29-27.
UCR opened up a 4-0 lead in set two on three Brewer kills and a block from Tanksley and Evelyn Hendrix. Hendrix extended the lead to 5-2 with her third kill, and Madison Pulsipher, who earned the start, soon had two early set two kills at the first stoppage.
Another late spell of offense put UCR within two points on multiple occasions, including a fourth kill from Tanksley to make it 23-21. Brewer went cross-court with her eighth kill at 23-22.
UC Riverside and Utah Valley traded points to kick off set three before Pulsipher and Zeynep Belgutay kickstarted a 5-0 run that featured four Wolverine attack errors. Misu Nguyen served up an ace upon subbing in to double up UVU, 10-5.
Casi Doll registered her seventh kill to put UCR within a point at 15-14, and after UVU retained service, an attack error put the ball back behind the Highlanders' service line at 16-15.
UVU made one final push to the finish line in set three before completing the sweep.
UC Riverside starts its final road trip of the season next weekend, beginning on Friday, November 6, with a 6:00 pm first serve at Cal State Bakersfield on ESPN+.
