The UC Riverside volleyball team (8-21, 3-11) dropped a 3-0 game to Cal Poly (15-10, 10-4) in Big West Conference action on Saturday night at Mott Gym in San Luis Obispo.
Dominique Cowling (Benicia, CA) led UCR with eight kills and nine digs while Brittney Murrey (El Cerrito, CA) added four kills, nine digs, and 16 assists.
Down 8-4 in the decisive third game, the Highlanders outscored Cal Poly seven to two to take a 11-10 lead off a Mustang attack error. However, UCR could not force a game four as they were held to three points in the remaining set and lost 25-14.
UCR was behind early in the first but closed to within six at 14-8 off a Kelly Fink (San Dimas, CA) kill before the Mustangs outscored the Highlanders to win 25-16. In the second and down 3-0, UCR scored three consecutive points to tie the game at three apiece off two Cal Poly errors and a Dominique Cowling kill. The Highlanders then fell behind 17-8 but again rallied four straight points to close the gap, 17-13, off another Cowling kill before the Mustangs finished off the set 25-15.
UCR has only two games remaining on their schedule. They again face off against Cal Poly on Friday, Nov. 21 at home for senior day at 5:00 pm, and then conclude their season on the road at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7:00 pm.
