The UC Riverside volleyball team (5-11, 0-1) lost 3-0 to the UC Irvine Anteaters (6-8, 1-0) in their Big West Conference opener on Saturday evening at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside.
Down 6-5 in the first set, UCR scored three straight points to go up 8-6, led by Dominique Cowling's (Benicia, CA) kill and two attack errors by UCI. The Anteater's then went on a run of their own, but the Highlanders came back and tied the set at 21 apiece off Angela Pizzella's (San Jose, CA) kill. UCI proved to be too strong, however, as they rattled off four straight points to close out the set 25-21.
The second set got away from the Highlanders as Irvine built a 24-12 lead. UCR slowly battled back and scored six straight points, led by another Pizzella kill and more UCI errors, before ultimately succumbing 25-18. The third set bore striking resemblance to the second with UCI jumping out to an early lead and taking the set 25-17.
Cowling led the Highlanders with a team-high eight kills, while Pizzella added seven. Kimberly McNeal (Carson, CA) had a game-high 15 digs while Brittney Murrey (El Cerrito, CA) added 16 assists to her climbing total.
UCR continues Big West play against Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge on Oct. 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. respectively at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside.
