Garrett's Pair Of Goals Not Enough As UCR Falls 3-2 To Oregon in 2OT
9/12/2008 1:10:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Oregon 3, UC Riverside 2 (2OT) - Box Score
Long Beach, CA—Sophomore forward Heidi Garrett (Riverside, CA) scored two goals for the Highlanders in a neutral site meeting with Oregon Friday afternoon on the campus of Long Beach State, but it wasn't enough as the Ducks scored the game-winner with 4:28 remaining in the second overtime period to take the 3-2 win.
Oregon (4-2) got on the scoreboard early as Jessica Goodell dropped a shot past Highlanders (4-3) keeper Brittany Goetz (Irvine, CA) just 48 seconds into the game. Teresa Bowns made it 2-0 less than 22 minutes later on a header at the 22:31 mark.
Garrett got the UCR offense going with 26:34 gone in the first half on a free kick just outside the box. It was the first shot of the game for the Highlanders who were outshot in the period 14-2. Despite the difference in opportunities, UC Riverside went into the locker room trailing by one, 2-1.
The shot discrepancy continued in the second half as the Ducks took 12 shots to the Highlanders' five, but it was Garrett's shot from 35 yards out that evened the score. Oregon outshot UCR 4-0 in the first extra period, but couldn't dent the net.
In the second OT period, it was Bowns who picked up her second goal of the game knocking in a loose ball in front of the Highlanders net for the win. On the day, the Ducks outshot the Highlanders 32-8 as Goetz picked up 11 saves.
Next up for UC Riverside is a home tilt vs. LaSalle on Sunday, September 14 at the UCR Soccer Stadium. Kick off is set for noon.
