UC Riverside 4, San Jose State 0 - Box Score
Riverside—Sophomore forward Heidi Garrett (Riveside, CA) scored her conference leading third and fourth goals of the season Sunday afternoon as the Highlanders topped visiting San Jose State 4-0 to improve to 4-2 on the year.
The first 19 minutes of play were uneventful as neither team generated much in the way of scoring chances. All that changed at the 25:36 mark when Garrett took a pass from Tessa Lennala (Temecula, CA) and deposited it in the back of the net for a 1-0 Highlanders lead.
Less than two minutes later, Ashley Parks (Etiwanda, CA), found Garrett's foot with a pass for her second goal of the day. Letty Villalpando (Moreno Valley) got into the act less than three minutes later as her second goal of the season gave the Highlanders three goals in a span of just over four minutes. Kristina Kelly (Escondido, CA) added an insurance goal with 25:10 to go in the match taking a pass from Taryn Bales (Irvine, CA).
It is the fourth shutout of the year for the Highlanders who have allowed just three goals in six games this season. Goalkeeper Brittany Goetz' (Irvine, CA) goals against average of 0.53 is the second best in the Big West.
Next up for UC Riverside is a neutral site game Friday against Oregon at Long Beach State. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT. The Highlanders return to the UCR Soccer Stadium on Sunday, September 14 as they host LaSalle at noon.
