UC Riverside 5, Southern Utah 0 - Box Score
Cedar City, UT—The UC Riverside women's soccer team began its 2008 season with a 5-0 win over the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah. It is the second consecutive season-opening win for the Highlanders who ran their overall season-opening record to 5-2-1.
2007 Big West Offensive Player of the Year Tessa Lennala got the Highlanders started with a penalty kick 17:37 into the game, and it was all they needed as the goalkeeping duo of Brittany Goetz and Jessica White were forced to make just one save between them.
"I was extremely pleased with the way we handled everything," said Head Coach Veronica O'Brien. "From our travel, to the altitude, to the field conditions, we played and looked like a composed, experienced team in picking up our first win of the year on the road."
Freshman Ciara Hilpert scored the second goal of the day for UCR at the 39:12 mark off of a Katie Sheldon pass which closed out the scoring in the first half. Lennala made it 3-0 with just 27 seconds into the second period off of a Kristy Adcock pass while unassisted goals from Sarah Mohammadi and Loana Holness rounded out the scoring.
The Highlanders return to Riverside this Sunday for their home opener at 2 p.m. against CSU Bakersfield.
Notes
The 5 goals were the most the Highlanders have scored since picking up a 5-1 win over Fresno State on September 21. That was also the last time UCR had a player score multiple goals in a game as Lennala scored a pair on that day as well.
