UC Riverside sophomore starting pitcher Paul Applebee was named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week following his complete-game win over Cal Poly this past Friday. It is the second Pitcher of the Week award and third weekly award for the Highlanders this season.
Applebee (Upland, CA/Damien HS) earns his first career Pitcher of the Week honor after striking out a career-high 10 and picking up his first career complete-game victory. He scattered eights and allowed just one unearned run to finish his season with a 3-5 record. Applebee held the Mustangs hitless until allowing a fourth inning two-out hit; he had struck out six of the first 11 batters he faced. After allowing the unearned run to come across in the seventh, he then retired seven of the next eight to preserve the 4-1 UCR win. The 10 strikeouts were also a team season-high.
Applebee joins Paul Bargas as the other Highlander to receive Pitcher of the Week honors this season. Bargas picked up the award back on April 7, after firing a complete-game win over then #9 Long Beach State.
Infielder Ryan Goetz was the loan Highlander pick up a Player of the Week award this season, after his performance in the weekend series at #5 UC Irvine. The Highlanders finished the season in a tie for third in the Big West Conference standings with a 21-22 overall record and a 14-10 record in conference.
