Women's Basketball Comes From Behind to Defeat UC Davis 56-52

(Riverside, CA) - Seyram Gbewonyo (Sylmar, CA) scored a season-high 19 points as the UC Riverside women's basketball team came from behind to defeat UC Davis (5-8, 1-1 BWC) 56-52 in a Big West Conference matchup on Thursday evening at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside. The Highlanders remain a perfect 3-0 at home and move to 6-9 on the season and 2-1 in the Big West.
The Highlanders were down by eight points with 7:02 remaining, but a Chanel Foster (Tustin, CA) three-pointer three minutes later tied the game at 46 apiece. After an Aggie free throw at the 1:59 mark, Gbewonyo hit two consecutive treys to put the Highlanders up 52-47 with 48 seconds to go.
UC Davis was then forced to foul to stop the clock, but the Highlanders hit their free throws as they held on to take the win.
Gbewonyo led all scorers with 19 points, including 5-of-10 from three-point land. Jessie Schmuckal (Chula Vista, CA) added 11 points while Kemie Nkele (San Diego, CA) was just shy of a double-double with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
