Box Score - Cal State Fullerton 3, UC Riverside 0
Fullerton, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team (2-14, 0-6) traveled to Cal State Fullerton on Thursday evening in Big West action seeking their first conference win of the year, but the Titans (12-7, 3-3) proved too much as they defeated the Highlanders in a close 3-0 contest, 25-20, 26-24 and 25-22.
Dominique Cowling (pictured) was the night's big hitter, powering 18 kills while hitting a team-leading .421. Tonbara Youpele had seven kills, two aces and 10 digs in support of Cowling's effort. Bianca Endersby and Shelby LeDuff stuffed two block assists apiece.
In the first set the Highlanders were down 22-11 but used a late 9-2 to rally to finish out the frame before the Titans clinched on set point.
In the second, UCR found themselves on the wrong side a 12-7 battle, but rallied and tied things up at 14 apiece, capped off by two Cowling kills. CSF would then take a three point advantage at five more junctures down the stretch before UC Riverside again tied up the contest at 24 all. However, the Titans used two consecutive kills to win 26-24.
Down by their largest margin of the third set, 17-13, UCR used another comeback to close the gap to within one, 21-20, on blocks by LeDuff and Endersby, and again at 23-22. However, that was the last points UCR would score as the Titans closed out the match with two straight points.
UC Riverside hits the road for another Big West showdown at UC Irvine on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 pm.
