Box Score - UC Irvine 3, UC Riverside 0
Irvine, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team continued Big West play on Saturday night with a tilt at No. 21 UC Irvine at the Bren Events Center. The Anteaters proved their national ranking though by sweeping the Highlanders 25-13, 27-25 and 25-20.
Dominique Cowling led UCR (2-15, 0-7) with 12 kills while Bianca Endersby (pictured) added 10 and hit a team-high .500. She also added a game-high 5 block assists.
The first set was all Anteater (16-3, 6-1), but in the second the Highlanders had an opportunity to even out the match. UCR took an early 4-0 and extended it to 11-6 off a Brittney Murrey kill.
UC Irvine then rallied and tied things up at 14 apiece. Both teams proceeded to trade points until the Highlanders took a three-point advantage at 22-19 off a Cowling kill.
The Anteaters rallied for four straight to take a 23-22 lead before UCR tied it at 23 and was at set point 24-23 before another tie game at 24 all.
An Endersby kill put the Highlanders up 25-24, but their lead was short-lived as UCI again tied up the set at 25 and used two consecutive points to spoil the Highlanders opportunity to even out the match.
UC Irvine is the third ranked opponent the Highlanders have faced this season. UCR previously competed against Utah, ranked No. 17 at the time, and Pepperdine, ranked 19th at the time, at the Utah Classic and Pepperdine Asics Classic respectively.
UC Riverside returns home to the Student Recreation Center for two Big West Conference games as they face Cal Poly on Friday, Oct. 23 and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Oct. 24. Both games are slated for 7:00 pm.
