Long Beach, CA - The UC Riverside men's golf team completed play at the Del Walker Invitational at Virginia Country Club on Friday by finishing up their suspended-second round action in the morning followed by the third and final round in the afternoon. The Highlanders, who
ended the first round of play on Thursday tied for fourth place out of 16 teams, dropped back to 11th overall to conclude the tournament.
In the "play six, count five" format, UCR fired scores of 350-364-365 to total 1097, just four strokes off tenth place.
Colorado State won team honors carding a 1030 total, while host Long Beach State finished second, Oregon placed third, Santa Clara fourth, and UC Santa Barbara rounded out the top five.
Individually, senior
Scott Clayton finished tied for sixth out of nearly 100 players with a six-under-par 204 (63-69-72). He led the pack after the first round but a four-under-par performance in the third round by Long Beach State's Michael Drake earned him individual medalist honors for the tournament. Drake carded an 11-under-par 199 (68-65-66) to lead all players.
Clayton's first round score of 63 was a personal-best and the low round of the tournament, tying him with former Highlander Brendan Steele for the school record.
Junior
Kevin Fitzgerald (pictured) fired UCR's lowest third round score of the day with a one-over-par 71, tying for 50th overall with a three-round 216 total. Sophomore Tom Lo finished one stroke back of Fitzgerald, carding a 217 (70-72-75) total to tie for 57th.
Newcomer
Roy Kim finished 11-over-par for the tournament shooting scores of 73-76-72=221, while junior
Andrew Patipaksiri shot a three-round 227 and freshman
Matt Fitzgerald finished with a 235.
The Highlanders conclude the fall portion of their schedule on Monday-Tuesday, October 26-27 at the Bill Cullum Invitational in Simi Valley, CA.
