Pacific 2, UC Riverside 1
The Big West Conference regular season is in its final weekend of competition, and in their second to last match of the season the UC Riverside women's soccer team fell to visiting Pacific (10-5-2, 4-2-1).
The Tigers got on the board first with 18 minutes to go when Kristina Wavomba corralled a pass in the Highlanders defensive end and slotted it past UCR keeper Jessica White for a 1-0 Pacific lead. Four minutes later Lauran Hogen and Wavombe combined on a give and go to push the Highlanders lead to 2-0.
Denise Thomas (pictured) helped the Highlanders cut the lead in half with six minutes to go in the first. A Tigers' foul gave UC Riverside a free kick from 30 yards out. Thomas's kick was blocked by a Pacific defender, but she quickly controlled the rebound and her subsequent shot sailed over Pacific keeper Jill Medigovich's head to make the score 2-1. It was Thomas's team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The Tigers took that 2-1 lead into halftime, and that score held up the remainder of the way.
The Highlanders have one more match on their 2009 schedule as they celebrate their senior class prior to their Sunday, November 1 match against UC David. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm PT.
