
The Beach Wins 3-1 Over UCR Volleyball In Big West Play

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team won their first set against Long Beach State since 2003 on Thursday, but it wasn't enough as the 49ers earned a 3-1 victory over the Highlanders in Big West action at the Student Recreation Center.
Top Big West squad Long Beach (17-6, 10-3) won the first set 29-27 in a marathon battle, but UCR (6-18, 3-10) came back in the second set to take home the 25-21 win. This second set win was their first against the 49ers since Sept. 19, 2003. After a close third set in which the Beach claimed the 25-22 win, the 49ers closed out the match with conviction, winning 25-16.
Senior setter Brittney Murrey (pictured) moved into a tie for second place all-time in career assists, tallying 41 on the night for 3,407 career assists. She is tied with Kym Murphy '04 and needs just one assist in the Highlanders next match to take hold of the second slot.
Long Beach State's Caitlin Ledoux tallied a game-high 33 kills to lead all players while UCR's Dominique Cowling recorded 18 kills on the night and Kelley Quinn added 13. Cowling also had 16 digs while Amanda Nilsson posted 15 digs and Tonbara Youpele had 11. Murrey posted a game-high 5 blocks to lead all players.
In the first set, the Highlanders fell behind 18-14 but rallied to tie things up at 21 capped off by three straight UCR kills. They then went on to take a 23-22 lead, their first since a 2-1 advantage early in the set, off a Youpele kill.
The 49ers then scored two consecutive to lead 24-23 at set point, but UCR again tied the set and 24. After three more tie scores, Long Beach used a UCR attack error and a service ace to score two points to win the set.
In the second set, the Highlanders were down by three, 8-5, but proceeded to tie up the set at eight apiece as they then opened up a 15-12 lead. Long Beach went on a 4-1 rally to tie the set at 16, but UCR had a four-point lead at two junctures down the stretch as they held on for the 25-21 win to tie the match at 1-1.
The Highlanders went down early in the third set, 10-5, but again rallied to within one, 13-12, on a Quinn kill. The 49ers then opened up a 22-18 lead before UCR scored four straight to tie things up at 22. However, Long Beach held the Highlanders scoreless the remainder of the set as they scored three straight to win 25-22.
In the fourth set, UCR was no match for the top-seeded 49ers as they took a 14-14 tie and rattled off 11 points to the Highlanders two for the 25-16 win.
The Highlanders have a day off before hosting UC Irvine in Big West Conference action on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 7:00 pm at the Student Rec Center in Riverside.
