Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team opened up the 2009-10 season on Friday evening with a 86-63 loss to Miami at the Student Recreation Center. Dressing just eight players due to an array of injuries, the Highlanders (0-1) played all eight with seven of them scoring points led by senior Marissa Rivera's (pictured) 20 and junior Alyssa Morris' 18.
Miami's Riquna Williams led all players with 34 points while three other Hurricanes tallied double digit points.
The Highlanders shot 35.5 percent from the floor and committed 22 turnovers compared to UM's 50.8 percent shooting and 15 turnovers. The Hurricanes also won the battle on the boards, out rebounding UCR 45-37.
In the first half, Miami scored five quick points before the Highlanders could get on board. UCR whittled the lead to one, 7-6, on a Rheya Neabors layup at the 15:41 mark, but the Hurricanes pushed their lead out to eight just a few minutes later.
UM would eventually open up a 17 point lead with 0:42 seconds to go in the first half and head to the locker room with a 37-22 advantage.
Miami kept their lead over 20 points for the majority of the second half as they shot 58.6 percent from the field in the second period, taking home an 86-63 victory.
UCR hits the hardwood again for a 2:00 pm match against Northern Arizona on Sunday, Nov. 15 at the Student Recreation Center.
