Box Score - San Diego State 66, UC Riverside 59
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team (2-5) dropped a close 66-59 contest to San Diego State on Friday evening at the Student Recreation Center. The Aztecs (4-3), who are receiving votes in the AP and USA Today national polls, came back from a 10-point first half deficit to take home the victory.
Five of the seven Highlanders who took the court scored at least eight points led by seniors Amber Cox (pictured) and Marissa Rivera's 18 and 16 points respectively. Quenese Davis led all players with 20 points for SDSU while Jene Morris added 18 and Paris Johnson had 17.
UC Riverside out shot SDSU 44.4 percent (12-of-27) to 32.1 percent (9-of-28) in the first period as the Highlanders led 21-11 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The Aztecs then scored eight unanswered points in the next three minutes to close the margin to two, 21-19, before both teams traded buckets to close out the half with UCR taking a slim 31-29 lead into the locker rooms.
In the second half, neither team led by more than four points until San Diego State went on a 9-0 run to lead by eight, 55-47, with 6:16 to go. The Highlanders never got closer than five down the stretch, however, as they were out shot 48.4 percent (15-of-31) to 44.0 percent (11-of-25) in the second period.
San Diego State won the battle of the boards, 36-32, while also forcing 23 Highlander turnovers -- their second-highest total on the year.
The Highlanders break for finals and return to the hardwood for two road games in the Midwest: a 5:00 pm tip on Thursday, Dec. 17 at Oklahoma State followed by an 11:00 am game at #20 Kansas on Sunday, Dec. 20.
