UC Riverside 7, San Francisco 4 - Box Score
The UC Riverside Baseball Team made it three in a row Sunday with a 7-4 victory over visiting San Francisco. The win improved the Highlanders record to 6-2 on the young season - the second best start to a campaign through eight games in the Division I history of the program.
Paul Applebee (2-0) took to the mound for UC Riverside coming off of a complete-game four-hitter at Cal on February 21. He was just as sharp in the early-going Sunday limiting the Dons to just one hit through the first three innings of play.
The Highlanders, meanwhile, scored three runs in the first off of San Francisco starter Alex Kalogrides (0-2) as Ryan Goetz drilled a 1-0 pitch over the center field fence plating Carl Uhl and Mike Nesbitt. UCR tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third on a pair of RBI singles by Tony Nix and Robert Brantly, and another in the fourth on a pinch-hit RBI single by Michael Hur. Kalgorides was responsible for the runs through three innings, and was replaced by Jordan Remer to start the fourth.
The Dons finally got to Applebee in the fourth when, with two outs, Derek Poppert reached on a bunt single which Applebee fielded and threw past first baseman Brian McConkey moving Popper up a base. Dane Braunecker followed with a hard grounder to third which Goetz misplayed scoring Poppert.
San Francisco went in order in the fifth, but with one out in the sixth, Connor Bernatz grabbed hold of an Applebee offering and lined it over the left field wall to make the score 6-2. Things got dicey for the Highlanders in the seventh as three of the first four hitters reached base to score one run, and a pinch-hit triple by Matt Chavez scored the fourth run of the game for the Dons allowing then to close to within two, 6-4.
Applebee worked his way out of the inning, and the Highlanders turned a 7-4 lead over to reliever Dustin Emmons in the eighth after manufacturing a run in the bottom of the seventh via a walk, a stolen base, and a squeeze bunt. Bernatz opened the eighth reaching on a throwing error by second baseman Bryan Horst, but Emmons retired the next three hitters in order.
Highlanders Head Coach Doug Smith called on closer Joseph Kelly to nail down the win in the ninth, and after giving up a lead off single to Robert Abel, Kelly retired the next three hitters in succession for his second save of the season.
Next up for UC Riverside is a Tuesday, March 3 home tilt with Texas Tech beginning at 6 pm. Both teams then travel to the Palm Springs Baseball Invitational scheduled for March 5-8. Game times and opponents for the Invitational have changed from their original postings, so be sure to check out the UCR Schedule for updated information.
