UC Riverside 3, Cal State Fullerton 1 - Box Score
A season-best crowd of 756 UCR faithful came out to the Riverside Sports Complex Friday evening to watch the Highlanders take on the number one team in the nation, Cal State Fullerton. They didn't go away disappointed as Michael Hur's three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth provided the Highlanders with all the offense they needed for a 3-1 win over the Titans. (Listen to John Ramey's call of the home run)
The win improves the Highlanders' record to 7-3 all-time when facing the top ranked team in the country. All 10 of those games have come against Cal State Fullerton.
Paul Bargas picked up the win for UC Riverside scattering nine hits over eight innings before giving way to closer Joseph Kelly who sealed the win in the ninth. Seven of the nine hits allowed by Bargas on the night were of the two-out variety, and it was a two-out rally in the top of the first that gave the Titans there lone run of the ballgame. Josh Fellhauer doubled to right center, and Jared Clark singled to the right side bringing him homeward.
UCR tried to get the run back in the bottom of the first as Carl Uhl opened the frame with a single. But that was the last baserunner the Highlanders would get off of Titans starters Daniel Renken until Daniel Pellegrino's double with two outs in the fifth.
The Highlanders finally got to Renken in the bottom of the sixth as Uhl singled with one out, stole second and moved to third on a Trevor Hairgrove single. That brought up Hur and with a 2-1 count, he drilled his third home run of the season over the right field fence to give UCR a 3-1 lead.
UC Riverside Head Coach Doug Smith let Bargas start the ninth, but after he walked the first batter of the inning, Smith made the call to the bullpen and his preseason All-American closer, Kelly.
The Highlanders and Titans tangle again on Saturday at 2 pm at the Riverside Sports Complex.
