After five unanswered points from the Mustangs that narrowed the margin to one, 12-11, the Highlanders rattled off nine straight points and led by their largest margin of the half, 21-11. Cal Poly cut the lead to four on two different occasions but could get no closer as UCR went into the half with a 33-26 advantage.
