Women's Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision To Oregon State In Home Opener
8/28/2009 9:11:38 PM | Women's Soccer
Oregon State 2, UC Riverside 1
UC Riverside scored the tying goal with 17:15 to go in the second period only to watch as the Beavers Courtney Wetzel drilled a 30-yard free kick past the outstretched arms of goalie Jessica White with 2:56 remaining and a 2-1 Oregon State win. The Highlanders (0-2-0) pushed the action the rest of the way but were unable to score the equalizer.
Entering the match, UCR was looking to avenge a 2-0 loss at Oregon State (1-1-0) from two years ago, but it was the Beavers who struck first with 27:40 gone in the match. A Highlanders penalty in the OSU box gave the Beavers a penalty kick, and Rachael Axon's shot found its way past White for a 1-0 lead.
Oregon State reciprocated with its own penalty in the UCR box and Denise Thomas (pictured) scored her first goal of the season on the subsequent penalty kick to tie the match.
With a litte over three minutes to play a Highlanders foul in their half gave the Beavers a free kick from 30 yards out. Wetzel stunned the home crowd by sending her shot into the left side of the goal for the 2-1 win.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Sunday home match against Texas State. Kick off is set for 1 pm.
