Box Score - UC Riverside 3, Sacramento State 2
Sacramento, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team picked up their first win of the 2009 season on Saturday afternoon, outlasting the Sacramento State Hornets 3-2 in game two at the Sac State Invitational. UCR (1-4) won the first two sets 25-21 and 30-28 before Sac State (2-3) won the next two 25-20 and 25-21, forcing a decisive fifth set which the Highlanders won 15-11.
After falling to Santa Clara on Friday evening, the Highlanders were looking to give first-year head coach Ron Larsen his first victory with the Blue and Gold, and came through in the fifth set. Both teams were tied at four in the deciding fifth before UCR outlasted the Hornets and took home the victory.
Even though UCR was playing at Sacramento State, the Highlanders had what felt like home court advantage as the UC Riverside men's soccer team, in town for their match against the Hornets later that evening, cheered and yelled and made more noise than the Sac State fans.
Three Highlanders tallied double figures as Dominique Cowling led with 22 kills and 17 digs, Kelley Quinn (pictured) had 14 kills and 19 digs, and Kelly Simpson recorded 13 kills and 12 digs. Brittney Murrey posted a game-high 43 assists while Shannon Moyneur had a hand in nine blocks and Bianca Endersby tallied eight blocks.
The Highlanders and Hornets were all notched at 13 apiece in the first set before UCR took the lead for good one point later, 14-13 off a Cowling kill. UC Riverside built a five-point advantage, 21-16, but saw Sac State rebound for three straight points to close the gap to 21-19. UCR outscored the Hornets down the stretch though and held on for the 25-21first-set win.
In the second set, the Hornets led 25-24 at set point only to see UC Riverside tie the contest up at 25 apiece and proceed to rally for a 30-28 victory. The tables turned in the third and fourth sets, however, as Sacramento State earned two victories on their home court to send the game into the deciding fifth set.
The Highlanders conclude the Sacramento State Invitational with a 5:00 pm match against Cal State Bakersfield.
