Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team made a furious rally in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth and final set, but after seven ties scores and four lead changes, Long Beach State came away with the 3-2 victory in Big West Conference action on Saturday night at the Student Recreation Center.
It looked as though Long Beach (15-5, 5-2) was on its way to the victory as they led 19-13 in the fourth set, but the Highlanders (2-18, 0-6) made a furious rally to tie the set at 21 off five straight points.
The 49ers went up 23-21, but UCR again tied the set at 24 thanks to three consecutive LBSU errors. The lead flip flopped two more times until the set was tied at 26, and the Highlanders used kills by Bianca Endersby and Kelly Simpson to win 28-26.
In the fifth set, Long Beach went up 3-0 and led 9-4, but UCR scored five straight to tie it up at nine apiece. The 49ers then went up two, 11-9, but the Highlanders scored three consecutive to retake the lead 12-11.
UC Riverside led at match point 16-15, but Long Beach State put a final stop to the Highlanders rally as they scored three consecutive points to win 18-16 and take home the 3-2 league victory.
Three Highlanders players recorded double-doubles led by Shelby LeDuff's career-high 19 kills and 17 digs. Amanda Vialpando added 14 kills and 17 digs, while Kelly Simpson had 13 kills and 17 digs for UCR.
LBSU's Caitlin LeDoux led all players with 21 kills while Janisa Johnson had 25 digs.
The Highlanders struggled to open the first set as Long Beach quickly took a 6-1 lead and maintained it at 10-5. UC Riverside scored five of the next six points to get within one, 11-10, but the 49ers put on another spurt to go back up by four, 15-11.
The Highlanders reversed the momentum and used a 6-1 run to take their first lead of the set at 17-16. There were five more tie scores after that point, the last coming at 23-23, but UCR closed out the set with two straight points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Long Beach led from the get go in set two on its way to a 25-17 win, and won 25-18 in the third set to take a 2-1 lead.
Long Beach State, winners of the last two Big West Conference Championships and 10 overall, have been nationally ranked for most of the 2010 season and are currently receiving votes in the national polls.
Tonight's five-set match is the first in the Division I history of the UCR program, and the first since Nov. 15, 1977 in a 3-2 UCR win. The last time the Highlanders defeated the 49ers was back on Sept. 19, 2003 in a 3-1 upset of #23 ranked Long Beach.
