Riveride, CA - After falling in five sets to Long Beach State on Saturday night, the UC Riverside volleyball team continued Big West Conference play on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to league-leading Cal State Fullerton at the Student Recreation Center.
The Titans (17-4, 6-1) exploded out of the gate quickly taking a 5-0 lead before the Highlanders could record a point. UCR got within six at 11-5, but it was the closest they would get as Fullerton cruised to a 25-11 victory.
The second set was tightly contested as there were 18 tie scores and five lead changes. The Highlanders led by two, 20-18, late in the set, but the Titans tied the set at 20 and went up one, 21-20.
CSF was up at set-point 24-23, but a kill from Shelby LeDuff tied the set at 24 before Fullerton scored the next two points to win 26-24.
In the third set, the Titans started pulling away leading 22-14, but there was still some gas in the Highlanders tank as they rallied for 10 straight points to take a 23-22 advantage. Kelly Simpson had three service aces during that span, while Amanda Vialpando recorded two kills to cap off the run.
It wasn't enough, however, as Cal State Fullerton put a stop to UCR's rally and closed out the match with three consecutive points to win 25-23.
LeDuff led UC Riverside with 11 kills and 9 digs while Vialpando and Simpson each added 10 kills.
The Highlanders return to the court on Friday, Oct. 22 at Pacific for a Big West Conference match at 7 pm in Stockton, CA.
