Irvine, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team returned to Big West Conference play on Tuesday evening with a 3-1 loss at UC Irvine in four sets: 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, and 25-21.
The Highlanders (2-15, 0-3) were down 23-22 in the first set but ralled for three straight points to win. Courtney Wypiszynski started the run with a kill to tie the set at 23, and after an attack error on UCI's Larissa Nordyke, block assists from Wypiszynski and Shannon Moyneur gave UCR a 25-23 win.
Early in that set, the Highlanders led at 4-1 and 10-7, but the Anteaters (5-12, 1-4) tied it at 12 and went on to take a 18-15 margin. UC Riverside scored five of the next seven points to force another tie score at 20-20 before going down 23-22.
Tied at six in the second set, the Anteaters scored eight consecutive points to take a 14-6 advantage. The Highlanders rallied back to tie the set at 17 after outscoring UC Irvine 11-3, capped off by a Shelby LeDuff kill.
UCI countered by scoring three straight to retake the lead 20-17 as they held on for the 25-20 victory to tie the match at 1-1.
In the third set, there were 13 ties scores and seven lead changes, the last coming at 20-20 late in the set. UC Irvine went on to lead at set-point 24-21, but the Highlanders used an attack error by UCI and a Bianca Endersby kill to get within one, 24-23, forcing an Anteater timeout.
After the break, UCI's Kari Pestolesi won the set for the Eaters with a kill as UC Irvine took a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Similar to the three previous sets, the Highlanders were wire-to-wire with the Anteaters down the stretch. UC Irvine led by just one, 21-20, but limited UC Riverside to one point for the remainder of the set as they took home the victory 25-21.
