Volleyball Wins First Set But Drops Next Three To Lose In Four At Cal Poly

San Luis Obispo, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team was looking to pick up its first win in Big West Conference play on Friday evening at Cal Poly, but fell short in four sets. The Highlanders (2-16, 0-4) won the first set 25-22, but could not close out the match as the Mustangs (14-4, 4-1) won sets two, three and four 25-48, 25-14, and 25-18 to win the match 3-1.
Kelly Simpson led UCR with 13 kills while Amanda Vialpando (pictured) added nine kills and a team-best 10 digs.
The Highlanders were down 19-14 in the first set but made a late rally to tie the set at 21, capped off by a service ace from Savannah Thomas. The Mustangs scored the next point to lead 22-21, but it was the last point they would score in the set as the Highlanders scored four straight to win set one 25-22.
The second set was tied at five in the early going when Cal Poly went on a 6-0 run to take an 11-5 advantage. The Mustangs opened up a nine-point lead, 16-7, as they cruised to a 25-18 victory to tie the match at 1-1.
UCR led 2-0 to open the third set, but Cal Poly scored five straight to take a 5-2 lead—a lead which they did not relinquish the rest of the set. Down just one at 6-5, the Highlanders went cold as they were outscored 11-4 as the Mustangs took a 17-9 advantage on their way to a 25-14 third set win.
The Highlanders went down early in the fourth set 9-4 but rallied to tie it up at 12-12. Cal Poly scored three consecutive to take a 15-12 lead, and UCR never got closer down the stretch as the Mustangs took home the victory 25-18.
The Highlanders are at Cal State Northridge on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 7:00 pm in Northridge, CA to continue Big West play.
