Volleyball Falls In Four To Cal Poly; Senior Night Saturday At 7 PM

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Cal Poly in Big West Conference action on Friday evening at the Student Recreation Center.
The Highlanders (2-29, 0-15) led 23-21 in the fourth set and were looking to send the match into five frames, but Cal Poly (22-7, 12-4) scored four straight to win 25-23 for the 3-1 victory.
Both Amanda Vialpando (10 kills, 13 digs) and Kelly Simpson (10 kills, 11 digs) recorded double-doubles for the Highlanders, while Megan Patterson added 13 digs and Kaite Meyers had 10.
Cal Poly's Kristina Graven led all players with 19 kills and 21 digs.
Tied at seven in the first set, the Mustangs went on an 8-2 run to take a 15-9 advantage. The Highlanders then outscored Cal Poly 10-5 to get within one, 20-19, off two straight CP errors.
The Mustangs led at set point 24-21, but UCR used kills by Bianca Endersby and Vialpando to get within one, 24-23. However, Catie Smith ended the set with her kill giving Cal Poly the 25-23 first set victory.
There were seven ties scores early in the second set, but the Highlanders turned an 11-11 tie into a 16-11 advantage. Savannah Thomas had two service aces during that span, while Endersby had two kills.
UCR maintained its lead the rest of the way, never allowing the Mustangs closer than two as the Highlanders tied the match at one with a 25-21 victory.
The Highlanders led 7-4 early in the third set, but a 7-0 Cal Poly rally turned the tables and gave the Mustangs an 11-7 lead.
UCR cut it to one, 12-11 after two straight Cal Poly errors, but the Mustangs went on a 9-0 run to put the set out of reach winning 25-14.
In the fourth, UCR found themselves in an early 5-1 hole, but rallied back to tie the set at 17. They then took a 19-17 advantage, but the Mustangs scored four straight to lead 21-19.
The Highlanders turned the tables and scored four consecutive on three kills and an Endersby service ace to lead 23-21. After a timeout, Cal Poly was able to regroup as they rattled off four points to win the set and match 25-23.
The Highlanders conclude the season on Saturday, Nov. 20 against UC Santa Barbara at 7:00 pm at the Student Rec Center. UCR will celebrate senior night by honoring its three seniors, Kelly Simpson, Shannon Moyneur, and Savannah Thomas, prior to the game.
