Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Volleyball Team won the first set, had a six point lead late in the third, and had four set points in the fourth, but they were unable to convert falling to Cal State Northridge three sets to one in Big West Conference action Friday evening.
The Highlanders (2-25, 0-11) found themselves in a hole midway through the first trailing 19-14, but used a 5-0 run to tie the set at 19 thanks to three Matador errors and kills by Bianca Endersby and Kelly Simpson.
Cal State Northridge (12-16, 4-8) responded by scoring the next four straight to lead 23-19. Three-points later, the Highlanders faced set point at 24-21, but they scored four consecutive on two Amanda Vialpando kills, one Chelsee Arnitz kill, and a CSUN error to go up by one, 25-24.
After a UCR service error tied the score at 25, the Highlanders used another Vialpando kill and an Arnitz service ace to win the first set, 27-25.
The Matadors won the first point of the second set and never looked back, opening a 20-11 advantage midway through. UCR scored nine of the next 13 points to trail, 24-20, but a Natalie Allen kill gave CSUN the win, 25-20.
The Highlanders seemed poised to take a 2-1 advantage in the match with a 20-14 lead in the third, but the Matadors went on a 10-4 run to tie the set at 24. A Vialpando kill gave UCR the opportunity to serve for the set, but Northridge scored three straight to pick up the come-from-behind, 27-25 win.
The fourth set was the closest of the match as the Highlanders led most of the way, but never had a lead larger than four at 20-16. The Matadors refused to go away, scoring four of the next five points and cutting the UCR advantage to one at 21-20.
Six points later, a CSUN service error brought the Highlanders to set point at 24-23. However, a kill by Lynda Morales followed by a ball-handling error by Courtney Wypiszynski put the Matadors in the driver's seat. Wypiszynski responded by combining with Annishia McKoy on a block to tie the match at 25, and a Savannah Thomas kill gave UCR its second set point.
The team's traded the next four points with the Highlanders taking a swing at two additional set-winners, but the Matadors answered on each occasion eventually taking the set and the match, 30-28, following two UCR attack errors.
Kelly Simpson led all players with 18 kills while Vialpando added 12. Four different Highlanders played tallied double-digit digs, led by Megan Patterson's 17.
Net up for UC Riverside is a Saturday, November 6 meeting with UC Irvine. Time of the match is 7 pm PT at the Student Recreation Center.
