Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Volleyball Team welcomed the Anteaters of UC Irvine to the Student Recreation Center Saturday evening in search of their first Big West Conference win of the season. After splitting the first two sets, the Anteaters went on a roll taking the match three sets to one.
UC Irvine (6-19, 2-10) turned a 2-2 tie early in the first set into a 10-3 advantage, and eventually led by as many as nine at 20-11. UC Riverside (2-26, 0-12) mounted a comeback by scoring four straight to make it 20-15, and then got within four, 21-17, off of two Anteater errors.
A solo block from Courtney Wypiszynski stalled UCI at set-point 24-19, but a kill from Larissa Nordyke closed out the set for UC Irvine 25-19.
The Highlanders took an early 6-1 lead in the second set winning five straight points at one point, including two service aces from Kelly Simpson. UCR opened its largest margin of the set at 15-5, but the Anteaters began to rally, climbing to within four, 23-19, late in the set.
UCR then used a Savannah Thomas kill and an attacking error by UCI's Taylor Smith to even the match at one with a 25-19 victory.
Tied at 12 in the third set, the Anteaters scored five straight for a 17-12 lead. UCR responded by scoring three to cut the lead to 17-15, but UCI again rallied for six consecutive to take a 23-15 advantage.
The Highlanders made a similar rally and scored five straight on three Simpson kills and one kill each from Bianca Endersby and Shannon Moyneur to get within three, 23-20. However, a service error by Endersby put the Anteaters at set point, and a kill by Alyssa Squires gave UCI the 25-20 win.
UC Riveride went cold to open the fourth as UC Irvine scored the first eight points and never looked back taking the set, and the match, 25-14.
Endersby and Amanda Vialpando led the Highlanders with 11 kills apiece while Katie Meyers chipped in with a team-high 22 assists. UC Irvine's Kari Pestoli led all players with 14 kills, and Mary Carl's 37 assists led the Anteaters.
