Morris' 22 Points Lift Highlanders To 59-54 Win At Washington

Seattle, WA - Alyssa Morris led all players with 22 points and Tre'Shonti Nottingham added 15 to help the UC Riverside women's basketball team hang on for a 59-54 win at Washington (4-3) on Sunday afternoon at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
Tied at 50 with 3:07 remaining, a Nottingham free throw, a three-point play by Brittany Waddell, and two more Nottingham free throws gave the Highlanders a 56-50 lead with 41 seconds to go. The Huskies then scored two buckets sandwiched around a UCR free throw to cut the lead to a single possession, 57-54, with 19 seconds to go.
UW was then forced to foul, sending Nottingham back to the charity stripe with 0:06 left, as she hit both free throws to seal the 59-54 win.
The Highlanders improve to 5-2 on the season, their best-ever start in the Division I history of the program.
In the first half, UC Riverside quickly opened up an 8-2 lead through the first three and a half minutes of play thanks to three pointers from Rheya Neabors and Morris, and a pair of free throws from Nottingham.
The Huskies cut the lead to 10-8 four minutes later, but UCR scored 10 of the next 12 points to take a 20-10 advantage capped of by a Nicole Anderson three-pointer at the 7:26 mark.
The Highlanders then pushed their lead out to 29-15 after three straight buckets with 3:00 remaining in the half, and entered the break up 31-19.
Morris led all players with 12 first-half points as UCR hit 44.0 percent of their shots while limiting the Huskies to just 19.0 percent from the field.
Washington opened the second half hitting 66.7 percent of their shots through the first 5:02 in the period, and got within eight points three times. UW continued its offensive attack outscoring the Highlanders 11-0 to take a 46-44 lead with 8:12 to go.
The Highlanders rebounded to retake the lead 50-47 after four straight Morris points with 5:10 to go. UW then tied the game at 50 with 3:07 remaining, setting up the last three minutes of action where UCR held on for the win.
UC Riverside shot 40.4 percent from the field during the game while limiting Washington to 30.2 percent. UCR also capitalized on 25 points off 19 UW turnovers. The Huskies outrebounded the Highlanders 41-26 and also had 19 second chance points to UCR's two.
The Highlanders continue their four-game cross-country road trip on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at Oregon at 7 pm.
