Morris' Double-Double Not Enough As Highlanders Fall To Anteaters 53-46

Riverside, CA - Alyssa Morris' 20-point, 10-rebound double-double was not enough Friday afternoon at the Student Recreation Center as the UC Riverside women's basketball team fell to UC Irvine in its conference opener 53-46.
The Highlanders drop to 6-6 overall and 0-1 in Big West play, having lost their last four straight. The Anteaters improve to 9-4, 1-0.
Mikah Maly-Karrois had the hot hand early for the Aneaters scoring six of the team's first eight points. UC Irvine led the entire half building an eight-point lead at 26-18 with 5:18 to go in the period, but the Highlanders scored three straight layups to get within two, 26-24, with a minute and 16 seconds left.
The Anteaters took a 29-24 advantage into the locker room thanks to 52.2 percent shooting from the field. The Highlanders connected on just 41.7 percent of their shots in the half while committing 10 turnovers. Jade Smith-Williams' 14 points in the first led all scorers while Morris paced UCR with 10 in the first 20 mintues of play.
UC Riverside scored the first six points of the second half to take their first lead of the day, 30-29. Kassandra McCallister drained a three-pointer on UC Irvine's very next possession as the Anteaters regained the lead.
Despite limiting UC Irvine to just 36.8 percent shooting in the second period and forcing 10 Anteater turnovers, the Highlanders were never able to close the gap again as they connected on 36.7 percent of their shots after the break including an 0 of 9 performance from beyond the arc. On the day, UC Riverside hit just 3 of 18 shots from long distance.
Smith-Williams finished with a game-high 28 points, while Maly-Karros added a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
The Highlanders take a one-game break from league play as they head north to Fresno State on Monday, January, 3 at 5:30 pm PST in Fresno, CA.
