UC Riverside vs. Cal Poly Game Notes
There are five more games remaining for UCR in the Big West Conference regular season, and the Highlanders postseason chances got a big boost over the weekend with Saturday’s 76-59 road win at Cal State Fullerton. That victory, coupled with a UC Irvine loss to the Titans on Wednesday, moved UC Riverside into eighth place in the conference standings. The top eight teams advance to the Big West Tournament in Anaheim, CA.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Homecoming 2010 meeting with Cal Poly on Saturday, February 13 at the Student Recreation Center. Tip is scheduled for 5 pm, and UCR fans who are unable to attend may listen to all the action as The Voice of the Highlanders, John Ramey, brings the call to gohighlanders.com.
UCR lost a heartbreaker to the Mustangs earlier in the year when Shawn Lewis drained two free throws with two seconds remaining to give Cal Poly a 67-65 win. The Highlanders shot just 14 of 25 from the free throw line that night, including 6 of 13 in the second half, in letting the game slip away.
Cal Poly followed up its January 21win over UC Riverside with a 73-72 victory over Cal State Northridge improving their conference mark to 5-2. Since then, however, the Mustangs have lost five straight including four in conference to drop back into sixth place in the Big West.
A win over the Mustangs could help put some breathing room between UC Riverside and UC Irvine and move them closer to Cal State Northridge (4-6) in seventh place. The Anteaters host UC Davis on Saturday. and the Matadors host the Titans
