Foul Trouble And Poor Shooting Plague Women's Hoops At Cal Poly

San Luis Obispo, CA - Foul trouble and poor shooting plagued the UC Riverside women's basketball team on Saturday evening at Cal Poly as they dropped a 58-51 decision at Mott Gym in Big West action. The Highlanders fall to 11-14 overall and 8-4 in conference play while the Mustangs improve to 16-8, 9-3.
UCR shot 35.4 percent (17-of-48) from the field and just 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from three-point range while hitting less than 60 percent (14-of-24) from the free throw line.
Three Highlanders played with four fouls towards the end of the game, and Rhaya Neabors picked up her fifth foul early in the second half and was forced to sit out the remainder of the contest.
Alyssa Morris (pictured) paced UCR with 20 points grabbed a team-high eight rebounds while Amber Cox added 12 points. Cal Poly's Kristina Santiago led all players with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
The Highlanders were down by five points to start the second half and never got closer than three the rest of the period as the Mustangs pushed their lead out to 11 points at two junctures down the stretch. Cal Poly held on for the seven-point win, giving UCR their largest loss since Jan. 9 at Cal State Fullerton.
In the first half, the Mustangs opened an early 10-4 lead through six minutes of play before UCR rallied to a 15-13 lead capped off by a Morris three-point play -- their first lead since the opening minute of play. The teams traded buckets over the next few possessions until Cal Poly again opened a six-point advantage, 29-23, with 2:16 remaining, as they took a 31-26 margin into the break.
The Highlanders remain on the road for one more regular season game as they travel to UC Irvine on Thursday, Feb. 18. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
