UC Riverside 8, Loyola Marymount 6 Box Score
UC Riverside jumped out to an early lead at Loyola Marymount Friday afternoon and withstood a late comeback to pick up an 8-6 win over the Lions. The win improved the Highlanders record to 5-1 on the season while LMU drops to 0-6. Matt Andriese (pictured) went seven and a third innings for UCR to pick up his first win of the season.
The Highlanders struck first scoring three runs in the top of the first, all unearned, thanks to a pair of Lions errors. With one out, Joey Gonzales reached on an error by second baseman Jonathan Johnson and promptly stole second. Michael Hur then lifted a fly ball to center that Matt Lowenstein misplayed scoring Gonzales and putting Hur on second base. Justin Shults then turned on an 0-1 pitch and deposited it over the right center field fence for a 3-0 UCR lead.
Loyola Marymount got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning as they opened the frame with two doubles, a single and an RBI groundout. UCR starter Andriese settled down after that retiring 16 straight batters.
Meanwhile, the Highlanders scored three more runs in the top of the third on an RBI single by Eddie Young and a double to right center by Bryan Horst that scored two runs. Joey Gonzales's sac fly in the top of the fourth made it 7-2 UC Riverside, and a Brian McConkey single to center in the fifth put the Highlanders up six, 8-2.
Loyola Marymount got two back in the bottom of the sixth, and struck for two more in the eighth. Andriese gave way to Mike Wolford with one out in the eighth, and the Highlanders leading by three. After an RBI single made it 8-6 UCR, Wolford picked up a double play grounder off the bat of Ryan Hawthorne to get out of the inning.
The Highlanders went in order in the top of the ninth, and Wolford struck out two of the first three batters he faced in the bottom of the inning. Jonathan Johnson singled to put runners on first and second and a passed ball moved each of them up 90 feet. Wolford then hit Jason Barmasse on a 2-2 count to put the winning run on first, but Matt Koch flew out to right to end the ball game.
In all, five Highlanders batters had two hits on the day and six scored at least one run. UC Riverside was without the services of third baseman Ryan Goetz who injured his right knee vs. Bethune-Cookman on Monday and is expected to be out for several weeks.
UC Riverside and Loyola Marymount are scheduled to play a double header Saturday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex beginning at noon, and a single game on Sunday at LMU at 1 pm.
