Loyola Marymount Rallies For 10-3 Baseball Win Over UC Riverside

Loyola Marymount 10, UC Riverside 3 Box Score
UC Riverside starter Matt Larkins took a two-hitter into the sixth inning with the Highlanders clinging to a 1-0 lead, but Loyola Marymount (1-6) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and erupted for seven in the seventh to pick up a 10-3 win over UCR (5-2).
Brian McConkey, who was moved to the lead-off spot for Sunday's game, led off the fourth with a double to left center, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Michael Hur sac fly to give UC Riverside a 1-0 lead. Meanwhile, Larkins allowed just four base runners through the first five innings and appeared to be cruising to his second win of the season.
The bottom of the sixth was a different story, however. Larkins picked up the first out of the inning on a Jonathan Johnson fly ball to right, but each of the next three hitters reached base, loading them for third baseman Shon Roe. His fly ball to right scored Barmasse to tie the game, and Larkins gave way to reliever Dustin Emmons.
Ryan Hawthorne greeted Emmons with a single to left scoring Koch, and Joel Lincon singled to left as well driving home Matt Lowenstein before Alex Guthrie struck out swinging to end the inning.
Trailing 3-1, the Highlanders put two runners on in the top of the seventh but were unable to bring them home. The wheels came off for Emmons and UCR in the bottom of the frame as the first four batters reached safely making it 4-1 LMU. Tommy Mackoul replaced Emmons on the mound, and he was met by a Lowenstein single through the right side that made it 5-1 Lions.
Head Coach Doug Smith then brought in Donovan Gonzales to put out the fire, but he plunked the first batter he faced loading the bases once again. Hawthorne singled to right to plate two more runs before the Highlanders were able to record the second out of the inning. An error by shortstop Trevor Hairgrove filled the bases yet again, but Brad Bauer's pinch-hit double cleared them ending the scoring for the Lions and giving them a nine-run advantage.
The Highlanders got two runs back in the top of the eighth as a Joey Gonzales sac fly to left brought home Hairgrove and Hur singled to left plating McConkey.
Mitch Pitito, who recorded the last out of the seventh for UC Riverside, retired the Lions in order in the bottom of the eighth, but the Highlanders were unable to reach base in the ninth and Loyola Marymount had the 10-3 victory secured.
Ramiro Carreon (1-0) allowed just three hits and one run in six innings to earn the win while Larkins (1-1) was saddled with the loss.
