Box Score - UC Riverside 73, Cal State Fullerton 54
Anaheim, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team played solid defense and used consistent shooting to defeat Cal State Fullerton 73-54 in the quarterfinals of the Big West Conference Basketball Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Anaheim Convention Center. The Highlanders move on to the semifinals on Friday at 2:30 pm against Cal Poly--the team that knocked them out of the tournament last season.
All-Big West First-Team guard Alyssa Morris led all players with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field including 2-of-3 from three-point range. Brittany Waddell (pictured) added 14 points and Rheya Neabors had 10 for UCR.
The Highlanders shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the field for the game and held the Titans to 32.8 percent (20-of-61) shooting, including 29.4 percent from the field in the second period.
UCR's 19-point win against the Titans in the conference tournament is the largest since a 26-point win over the same school in 2005.
The Highlanders scored 40 of their 73 points in the paint and benefited from 26 points off 18 CSF turnovers. UC Riverside also used 21 bench points to help offensively, including eight from Marissa Rivera, four apiece from Jessie Schmuckal and Ashley Collier, and three from Jazzmin Lewis.
In the first half, Morris led all players with 10 points as the Highlanders opened up an 11 point lead on two occasions towards the end of the period. CSF scored the initial bucket and led 4-2 early on, but UCR tied it up and took a 5-4 lead at the 17:29 mark on a Rhaya Neabors free throw.
The Highlanders lead stayed around five points until 6:13 remaining when a Rivera jumper pushed it out to double-digits, 24-14. A Morris three-pointer with 0:38 gave UCR an 11-point advantage, but the Titans countered with a long ball of their own to cut it down to eight, 32-24, heading to the break. UCR scored 20 of their 32 points in the paint, and scored 13 points off seven CSF turnovers.
The Highlanders opened the second half by extending their lead to 17, 45-28, at the 15:52 mark. Waddell scored on a three-point play and added two free throws on the next possession to give UCR its largest margin of the game up until then.
Four minutes later, the Highlanders enjoyed a 52-33 lead off a Morris layup, and led by 20 a possession later, 54-34, off a Rheya Neabors layup. UCR then opened up a 62-39 lead with 6:04 remaining, but the Titans rallied for six straight to cut the margin to 17, 62-45.
Time was on the side for the Highlanders, however, as both teams traded buckets down the stretch and UC Riverside held on for the 73-54 victory.
The 73 points scored is the most since an 80-point output on Feb. 18 at UC Irvine, and is tied for the most points UCR has scored in a single game in the Big West Tournament since joining in 2001-02.
The Highlanders will face Cal Poly on Friday at 2:30 pm in the tournament semifinals.
