Palo Alto, CA - Playing in their third NCAA Tournament in five years, the #16 seeded UC Riverside women's basketball team had the daunting task of facing #1 seeded and No. 2 nationally ranked Stanford in the first round at Maples Pavilion on Saturday evening. The Cardinal proved its national ranking, however, by earning a 79-47 win over UCR in the NCAA Tournament.
The Highlanders conclude their season with a 17-16 overall record, while the Cardinal improve to 32-1 and will play Iowa on Monday, Mar. 22 in the Second Round.
"I felt that it was a hard-fought game for us, " Head Coach John Margaritis stated. "Stanford is as good as they get and it was an honor for us to come in here and compete against them."
The Cardinal jumped out of the gate early, taking a 10-3 lead after four and a half minutes of play. Stanford initially hit five of their first nine shots while limiting the Highlanders to just 1-of-4.
After that point, however, UCR's offense came alive as they hit five of their next seven shots and put on a 16-10 run to climb back within two, 18-16, capped off by a Brittany Waddell three-pointer at the 11:57 mark.
The Cardinal put a rally together of their own over the next five minutes as they scored nine straight to push their lead out to 11, 27-16, at the 7:31 juncture. UCR hit just one of its next nine attempts as Stanford opened up a 13 point lead, 32-19, at the 3:43 mark.
The Highlanders used a jumper each by Alyssa Morris and Amber Cox to close the margin back to single digits at 32-23 with 1:44 to go in the half, but Stanford closed on a 5-0 run to take a 37-23 advantage into the break. Stanford shot 40.6 percent from the floor in the first half while UCR was just below at 39.1 percent.
Stanford opened the second half on a continuation from the first period by scoring 10 straight points on 50.0 percent shooting, extending its margin to 47-23 with 15:42 left in the game. The Highlanders shots were off their mark as the Cardinal continued to apply pressure, opening up a 33 point lead, 63-30, with 9:33 remaining.
UCR could only close the gap to 27 points on two different occasions the rest of the half as Stanford went on for the 79-4 victory.
Freshman Tre'Shonti Nottingham led the Highlanders with 10 points in 18 minutes of play, while three Cardinal players scored in double figures led by Nnemkadi Ogwumike's 19 points.
Stanford shot 44.3 percent from the field while holding UCR to 38.0 percent from the field. The Cardinal also out rebounded UCR 44-29.
The Highlanders punched their ticket to the big dance after winning the Big West Conference Tournament on Mar. 13 against top-seeded UC Davis.
This marks the fourth postseason for UCR in five years, as the team earned trips to the NCAA Tournament in the 2006 and 2007 seasons, and a trip to the women's NIT in 2009.
UC Riverside will return all but three seniors for the 2010-2011 season.
