
Tawny Poggio Named Big West Women’s Soccer Player of the Week

Irvine, CA—UC Riverside’s freshman goalkeeper Tawny Poggio was named the Big West Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week as announced by the conference offices on Monday.
Poggio, from Santa Ana, CA, (Mater Dei High School), helped the Highlanders to a 1-1 record this past weekend with a tough 1-0 loss to No. 19 ranked Cal Poly on Friday and a 2-0 shutout over UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. She posted 10 saves on 28 shots in the shutout. For the week she made 19 saves and faced 54 shots.
Sunday’s 2-0 win over UCSB was the Highlanders seventh shutout of the season. Poggio has recorded five of those shutouts and combined for one other, setting a new school record for shutouts in a single season.
The Big West Conference Player of the Week Award is voted upon by the conference offices. Each school can nominate a player for consideration. It is the first player of the week award for the women’s soccer team this season.
