Riverside—Lisa Jensen’s second goal of the game broke a 2-2 tie in sudden death overtime, as the UC Riverside Highlanders remained undefeated in Big West play with an exciting 3-2 win over the Utah State Aggies at the UCR Soccer Stadium on Friday.
Seven minutes into the first overtime period, freshman Tanya Noonan launched an acrobatic flip throw right in front of the Utah net, that reigning Big West Player of the Week Renee Scachetti headed to an open Jensen for the game winner.
With the win, the Highlanders improve to 8-4-1, 2-0-1 in the Big West, while Utah State falls to 6-6-2, 0-3.
Jensen’s goal sent the game into overtime, knotting the score at two in the 59th minute with her first goal of the evening. Ashley Stevens launched a shot that Utah State goalie Megan Mills knocked down, Jensen collect the deflection and blasted the ball into the net.
Utah State jumped on the board first, with Brigid Turner dribbling through two UC Riverside defenders and beating UCR goalie Katie Blank to the right post for a 1-0 lead.
UCR tied the score ten minutes later, on a penalty shot from Scachetti. Jessica Armel’s shot from ten yards out hit off the post and Vannessa Chanez was fouled trying to put a leg on the rebound, setting up Scachetti’s goal.
The Aggies regained the lead early in the second half, when Turner scored her second goal of the game off of a great feed from Chanel Blaquiere.
The Highlanders will return to action on Sunday in a Big West Conference match-up, playing host to the University of Idaho on Sunday, October 13 at 1:00 PM.
