Irvine, CA—UC Riverside women’s soccer player Renee Scachetti was named the Big West Conference’s Co-Player of the Week for the week of October 2-9, it was announced Monday. She is the first Highlander soccer player to be so honored this season and she shares the accolade with Long Beach State freshman midfielder/forward Dana Farquhar.
A senior midfielder, Scachetti (Torrance, CA/Bishop Montgomery HS) scored the game-winning goals in both of UCR’s conference victories this week to help the Highlanders run their winning streak to a season-high five games and start 3-0 in Big West play for the first time in school history.
On Friday against Pacific, Scachetti assisted on the opening goal to set a new personal career-high with five assists this season. She later added what would prove to be the game-winning goal on a header that made it 2-0 in an eventual 2-1 UCR victory. On Sunday, Scachetti scored the game’s only goal on a 20-yard left-footed shot to defeat Cal State Northridge 1-0.
Scachetti increased her team-record totals to 11 goals and 27 points in 2005 and has scored at least one goal in eight of UCR’s nine victories, including five game-winners. She has either scored or assisted on 16 of the Highlanders’ 22 goals this year.
Scachetti is already UCR’s all-time career leader in goals and points. Her 27 career goals are 14 more than the nearest Highlander, while she has a 30-point lead with 67 career points. She also has 13 career assists to lead that category by two.
This is Scachetti’s second Big West Player of the Week award in her career, having previously earned the accolade as a freshman. Last week, Scachetti was named to the Soccerbuzz.com Elite Team of the Week. She is the first Highlander to earn Player of the Week honors since junior goalkeeper Tawny Poggio was Co-Player from September 27-October 3, 2004.
