Riverside—UC Riverside Head Men's Basketball Coach Jim Wooldridge announced today that point guard Daymond Cowlah has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for the Highlanders beginning in 2010-11.
"Daymond is one of the best point guard prospects we saw all year long, and we're excited to have him become a part of our program," said Wooldridge. "During his prep school year, he was able to develop his game, mature as a player, and prepare for the kind of competition he is going to see at the Division I level. Our fans are going to really enjoy watching this young man be a part of our program over the next four years."
The Los Angeles, CA native attended the Kiski School in Saltsburg, PA last season where he helped the Cougars to a 16-4 record and a No. 21 Max Preps National Prep School Basketball Ranking. The left-hander averaged 20.6 points, 10.2 assists and 5.4 steals per game while also earning membership on the school's honor roll. Cowlah also recorded two triple doubles on the year—a 26-point, 12-assist, 10 steal effort in a 74-66 win over La Lumier School which helped Kiski capture a share of the Midwest Prep Classic Championship, and a 16-point, 13-assist, 10-steal performance in a 75-34 win over Western Reserve Academy.
Kiski won the Interstate Prep School League Championship, while Cowlah earned Team MVP honors and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Midwest Prep Invitational and the National Prep School Invitational.
"Daymond is one of the most dedicated, intelligent, hardworking and coachable point guards I have had the opportunity to work with" said Kiski Head Basketball Coach Daryn Freedman said. "(He) is a leader on and off the court, and will certainly be an asset to the University of California, Riverside."
The year prior, Cowlah played at Montclair Prep where he averaged 24 points and seven assists as a senior while being named First Team All-Olympic Conference and First-Team Division IV All-CIF.
