Volleyball Falls In Five Sets To Santa Clara To Conclude Fresno State Classic

Fresno, CA - After falling in its first two matches of the season, the UC Riverside volleyball team was looking to tally a 'W' in the win column on Saturday evening against Santa Clara in the third match of the Fresno State Classic.
The Broncos (2-1) won the first set 25-18, but the Highlanders (0-3) won the next two 25-20 and 25-21 before SCU won the fourth 25-14 to force a decisive fifth set.
In the fifth, the Highlanders had a 2-1 lead but saw Santa Clara rally off seven straight to take an 8-2 advantage en route to the deciding 15-9 win.
Kelly Simpson (pictured) recorded her second double-double of the young season with 17 kills and 12 digs, setting a career-high in kills and tying her career-high in digs.
Amanda Vialpando added 11 kills for the Highlanders while Megan Patterson recorded 16 digs and Courtney Wypiszynski had 37 assists.
For Santa Clara, three players tallied double-digit kills led by Kaleigh Durket's game-high 21.
In set one, the Highlanders used a Bronco error and two Bianca Endersby block solos to score three in a row and turn a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead. SCU rallied for four consecutive points to retake the lead 6-5 -- a lead they would not reliquish the remainder of the set as won 25-18.
The tables turned in the second set as, tied at 18, UCR outscored Santa Clara 7-2 to win 25-20.
Riding their good vibes, the Highlanders went on to win the third frame 25-21 in a set that saw them lead for the majority of the time.
In the second and third sets, UCR had sideout percentages of 75 and 68 percent, respectively.
In the fourth, the Broncos led early and pushed the lead out to 20-10, forcing the fifth and final set with their 25-14 win.
The Highlanders travel to Northern California next weekend for the San Jose State / Saint Mary's Tournament on Sept. 3-4.
