Box Score - UC Riverside 3, High Point 0
Tempe, AZ - The UC Riverside volleyball team (1-7) won its first match of the 2010 season on Friday evening with a 3-0 sweep of High Point (2-7) in the second game of the ASU Sheraton Invitational at Wells Fargo Arena, 25-22, 25-17, and 25-22.
The win stops a six-game losing streak and marks the first three-set win for the Highlanders since Aug. 30, 2008.
Down 11-8 in the first set, the Highlanders used four kills -- three by Simpson and one by Chelsee Arnitz -- two Panther errors, and a block by Arnitz and Courtney Wypiszynski to rally for seven straight points to turn the tables and take a 15-11 lead.
After High Point got one back, UCR rattled off another five consecutive points to open up a 21-12 margin, its largest of the set.
High Point made it close down the stretch, but two attack errors gave the Highlanders a 25-22 first-set win.
Looking to continue their winning ways, the Highlanders turned an 11-11 tie into a 15-11 advantage thanks to two more Simpson kills, another block by Arnitz and Wypiszynski, and an attack error by the Panthers.
High Point scored one point to make it 15-12, but UC Riverside then went on a 6-0 run by capitalizing on more HPU errors to lead 21-12 for the second time in as many sets.
The Highlanders went on to win the second set 25-17, their largest win margin of the 2010 season.
In the third, the Panthers took a four point lead at two different junctures early on before the Highlanders tied the set at 11 apiece on an Endersby kill.
The teams traded points and had seven tie scores over the next 10 possessions until two attack errors by HPU and a LeDuff kill gave the Highlanders a 24-21 lead. A service error by UCR made it 24-22, but Simpson closed out the match with a kill to give UCR a 25-22 win.
Shelby LeDuff (pictured) posted a career-high and game-high 16 kills to lead UCR on the offensive attack.
Bianca Endersby and Kelly Simpson each added eight kills, while Megan Patterson and Savannah Thomas both had 10 digs.
UC Riverside concludes the ASU Sheraton Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 11 with a 1 pm match against the host Sun Devils.
