Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team (1-13, 0-2) completed its Big West Conference opening weekend with a 3-0 loss to Pacific 25-21, 25-21, and 27-25 at the Student Recreation Center on Saturday evening.
The Highlanders took command of the first set with an 11-5 lead and opened it up to their largest margin at 17-9 off a Bianca Endersby service ace. Still leading 20-15, the Highlanders went cold as they were limited to just one point the rest of the set. The Tigers (8-5, 1-1) ended on a 10-1 run to win set one 25-21.
In the second set, there were 10 tie scores and six lead changes throughout, the last one coming when the Highlanders tied the set at 18 off a Kelly Simpson kill. Similar to the first set, however, Pacific outscored UCR to close out the set, eventually winning 25-21.
In the third, the Highlanders again led midway through at 14-9, but the Tigers ralled to tie the set at 15 as they opened up a 20-15 advantage.
With Pacific at match-point 24-20, a service error by the Tigers combined with another Endersby kill and a Tiger attack error tied the set at 24-24. Pacific took a 25-24 lead off a Savannah Thomas service error, but the Highlanders tied the set at 25 on a Simpson kill.
The Tigers closed the match with two straight kills to stop UCR's rally, winning 27-25.
Simpson led the Highlanders with 11 kills while Shelby LeDuff added 11 digs and Katie Meyers had 10 digs in addition to her game-high 28 assists. Pacific's Svenja Engelhardt led all players with 14 kills.
