San Jose, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team (0-5) faced its second ranked opponent of the 2010 season on Saturday morning with a 3-0 loss to No. 14 ranked UCLA at the San Jose State / Saint Mary's Tournament.
The Bruins (5-1) won in straight sets 25-19, 25-19, and 25-7.
Down 10-6 in the first set, a Kelly Simpson kill started a 3-0 run for the Highlanders as they closed the margin to just one, 10-9.
After staying within a few points of UCLA over the next couple possessions, the Bruins widened the gap towards the end of the set for a 25-19 win.
In the second set, the Highlanders turned a 6-2 deficit into a 7-7 tie, and later flipped a 10-7 hole into a 14-11 lead. During that span, UCR benefited from two UCLA errors sandwiched around consecutive kills from Amanda Vialpando, Shelby LeDuff (pictured), and Bianca Endersby.
UCR maintained its three-point lead at 17-14 and was poised to claim the set when the Bruins proved their national ranking by rallying off eight straight points to take a 22-17 advantage. The Highlanders could get no closer than four as UCLA won the second set 25-19.
In the third, the Bruins led early and never look back, cruising to a 25-7 win.
Endersby and LeDuff led the Highlanders with five kills apiece while Megan Patterson had 12 digs. UCLA's Dicey McGraw totaled a game-high 11 kills.
UCR concludes the weekend with a 7:00 pm match at Saint Mary's in Moraga, CA on Saturday evening.
