Box Score - San Jose State 3, UC Riverside 0
San Jose, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team opened play at the San Jose State / Saint Mary's Tournament on Friday evening by getting swept by the host San Jose State Spartans 25-21, 25-16, and 34-32.
Bianca Endersby (pictured) led the Highlanders with eight kills while hitting for a .353 clip. Shelby LeDuff added six kills and Kelly Simpson had a team-high 10 digs.
SJSU's Hanah Blume led all players with 14 kills on the evening.
Up 12-10 in the first, UCR scored three straight to open its largest lead of the set at 15-10, thanks to a Simpson kill, a Courtney Wypiszynski service ace, and a LeDuff kill.
The Spartans rallied from that deficit by outscoring the Highlanders 6-1 en route to tying the set at 16 apiece.
UCR then went up two, 18-16, on two LeDuff kills, but San Jose State scored four consecutive on its way to a 9-3 run to close out the set 25-21.
Down 10-6 in the second set, the Highlanders scored three points to close the gap to one, 10-9. That was as close as they would come during the frame, however, as the Spartans built a nine-point advantage for the 25-16 win.
Looking to avoid the sweep in third set, UC Riverside overcame a 21-18 deficit by going on a 6-2 run to take a 24-23 set-point lead. SJSU scored the next two for a 25-24 lead, but UCR tied it at 25 as both teams traded points over the next seven possessions.
Tied at 32, San Jose used a Highlander error and a Blume kill to win the marathon third set battle and ultimately the match with its 34-32 win.
The 32 points scored by UCR is the most since Nov. 6, 2009 in a 31-29 third set win against Cal State Northridge.
UC Riverside continues play with a 10:00 am match against No. 14 ranked UCLA in San Jose, CA on Saturday, Sept. 4.
