Box Score - UC Irvine 3, UC Riverside 0
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball made a late rally in set three hoping to push the match to four sets, but could not pull it out as UC Irvine took home a 3-0 victory in Big West Conference play on Thursday evening.
Amanda Vialpando led all players with 16 kills on the night while Shelby LeDuff added 13.
Both LeDuff and Vialpando recorded six kills apiece in set one as the Highlanders led 15-12 midway through. UC Irvine scored four straight taking a 16-15 advantage before eventually going up 22-20.
Consecutive kills by Tyler Dorsey and LeDuff tied the set at 22, forcing UCI to call timeout. After the break, the teams traded points until Aly Squires' kill put the Anteaters up at set-point 24-23.
Bianca Endersby's kill knotted the set at 24, but a service error by Endersby put UCI again up at set-point, 25-24. Vialpando's kill on the next play made it 25-25, but a Megan Reza service error and a service ace by Kristin Winkler lifted the Anteaters to a 27-25 first-set victory.
UCR fell behind 16-13 midway through the second set, but rallied back to tie it at 16 thanks to a UCI service error, an Endersby service ace, and a Megan Reza kill.
However, UC Irvine scored four straight to go up 20-16, and although the Highlanders got within two, it was not enough as the Anteaters took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 win.
After leading 6-4 early in set three, UC Riverside fell behind as the Anteaters scored five straight to go up 9-4. UCI pushed its lead out to 17-11, but the Highlanders scored six of the next seven points to close the gap to one, 18-17.
UC Irvine recovered and led 23-19 late. Another Highlanders rally was in the works, however, as UCR scored three straight on one Annishia McCoy kill and two UCI attack errors to close to 23-22.
After an Anteater timeout, another Squires kill put UCI put 24-22, and blocks by Taylor Smith and Alexandra Hauser lifted the 'Eaters to a 25-22 victory.
UC Riverside now begins a four-match road swing at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, October 15 at 7:30 pm in Santa Barbara, CA.
